Development of Fælles Web 2.0 – a brand new solution for Statens IT’s customer network.
Statens IT is a public agency under the Danish Ministry of Finance. They provide IT operations and services to government ministries, agencies, and self-governing institutions, serving more than 45,000 users every day, along with many additional visitors. With such a large user base, Statens IT recognized the need for an updated platform.Â
The agency works according to four strategic benchmarks, which Kruso has reflected upon throughout the collaboration: high customer satisfaction, high information security and secure operations, reliable projects, as well as climate-friendly and sustainable IT.Â
Statens IT offers its customers a comprehensive service for operating and editing websites – the platform is called Fælles Web. The purpose of this platform is to deliver a complete solution, encompassing a web content management system, the operation and maintenance of it, as well as support for clients, allowing them to easily build, maintain, and manage their websites.Â
The original platform was built in Umbraco 7, whose security support was expiring. Additionally, it was complex for Statens IT’s customers’ editors to update content, as the functionality did not match their needs.Â
A thorough overhaul of the platform was therefore necessary – and Kruso took on this task.Â
Kruso replaced the old solution with a brand-new platform called Fælles Web 2.0. Work began in November 2023, and by spring 2024, the pilot projects were ready to roll out!Â
The purpose of Fælles Web 2.0 is to deliver a complete solution to Statens IT’s extensive customer network, focusing on user-friendliness, security, and sustainability. The platform consists of newly developed front-end and back-end systems, and each of Statens IT’s clients has its own instance of the system, yet they share the same codebase and functionality.Â
Fælles Web 2.0 is built on the open-source Umbraco CMS version 13 in .NET 8, with Umbraco blockgrid implemented for flexible page layouts offering 35 different grid modules to choose from. This makes it easy to tailor each instance to the individual end customer’s requirements and design preferences. The solution also includes user-friendly tools, enabling the clients’ editors to quickly and easily ensure high-quality content and compliance with GDPR and accessibility legislation. These include, for example, a readability (lix) calculator, WCAG checker, CPR (Danish personal ID) input checks, and more.Â
Kruso has also developed an administration tool that makes it easy for Statens IT to create, modify, and remove customers and websites.Â
The entire solution is hosted on Statens IT’s own servers for increased data security. Statens IT owns and maintains the servers, ensuring full control over the system.Â
Fælles Web 2.0 is developed as a sustainable solution, automatically reducing CO2 emissions by up to 70%. This is achieved through several sustainable configuration initiatives:Â
All images are displayed in webp format, which is about 25% the size of a jpg image.Â
All images are loaded via lazy loading, only transferring them to the end user’s screen when needed.Â
All static elements are cached, so they don’t have to be generated each time.Â
The website’s architecture and backend code are optimized, eliminating the need to process large amounts of data for each page view. Thus, each view is lighter on the server and requires less energy.Â
Server scripts run only when necessary, rather than at fixed intervals, saving many server resources.Â
