IKEA

CMS strategy and content architecture.

IKEA was in the process of transforming its digital infrastructure to streamline how content was managed across their vast, multi-team global organization. They had already decided to use Contentful as their primary content management system (CMS), but the challenge lay in optimizing it for IKEA’s complex, decentralized structure.

Kruso was enlisted to provide strategic guidance on how to make Contentful work efficiently for a company of IKEA's scale, while aligning their content architecture across multiple teams and business areas.

Scaling a CMS for global operations

IKEA’s content ecosystem was incredibly diverse, with various teams across the globe handling different parts of the website and internal tools. Although they had chosen Contentful, the question remained: how could they maximize the platform’s potential to support their extensive content architecture without centralizing everything under one team or CMS?

A decentralized approach to content

We collaborated closely with IKEA to rethink their CMS strategy. Instead of forcing all content management through a single, centralized system, we proposed a decentralized model. This allows different teams to manage their own content independently, yet still operate within a unified framework. By optimizing how Contentful was used, we helped IKEA strike a balance between autonomy and efficiency, making the platform work for the complexity of a global organization.

Transforming how IKEA manages content

With the new strategy, IKEA has adopted a more flexible and scalable content management strategy. The changes enabled various teams to work more independently while maintaining a high level of collaboration across the organization. The strategic input was instrumental in shaping IKEA’s approach to content architecture, resulting in a more agile, effective, and future-proof system for managing content on a global scale.
