Web Accessibility Directive: For the public sector

In 2018, the Web Accessibility Directive (WAD) made it mandatory for public institutions to ensure that their digital solutions are accessible to everyone and comply with common EU requirements. The shared standard is called EN 301 549 and is continuously updated with new guidelines, with six new requirements expected by 2025. European Accessibility Act: For the private sector

In 2019, the EU decided that more private companies would also need to comply with the accessibility requirements in EN 301 549. The legislation, called the European Accessibility Act (EAA), comes into effect on June 28, 2025, and will impact companies offering products and services within: 

  • Banking and Financial Services 

  • E-Commerce 

  • Transport Services 

  • Telecommunications 

  • Audio-Visual Media Services 

  • E-Books 

  • Self-Service Terminals
